Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, talks, radio transcripts and writings related to Elling’s work with alfalfa breeding and management of seed production. The collection is primarily composed of correspondence with seed companies, colleagues in agronomy departments of land grant colleges and notable agronomists affiliated with the University of Minnesota, including H. K. Hayes and O.S. Aamodt. There is also a small amount of correspondence concerning the history of the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at the University of Minnesota.

Biographical Sketch of Laddie Joe Elling (1917-2001)

Laddie Joe Elling B.S. (1941), Oklahoma AM College, M.S. (1948), PhD (1950), University of Minnesota. Instructor (1950), assistant professor (1953-1957), associate professor (1957-1968), professor (1968-1985), Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, University of Minnesota. Known for his work in the field of forage crops and grass seed production and testing.

Laddie Joe Elling was born in Lawton Oklahoma on June 18, 1917. He served as an officer in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. As a researcher, Elling was well known for his leadership in the study of forage crops and grass seed production and testing. He was also a popular and effective teacher: in 1971, he won the University’s Horace T. Morse teaching award for outstanding contributions to undergraduate teaching. Laddie Elling died in St. Paul on August 8, 2001.
