Scope and Contents
The collection contains front matter and a corrected typescript for the forward to an updated 1966 edition of The Trumpeter of Krakow. The forward was written by former editor Louise Seaman Bechtel, who originally published in the book in 1928. The collection also contains pages from the previous edition, removed from the binding, with text edits for the 1966 edition.

Biographical / Historical
Louise S. Bechtel was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1894. She received a BA at Vassar College in 1915. She did graduate work at Yale University from 1915 to 1918. She was a pioneer in the field of children's literature, becoming the first children's book editor at Macmillan. In this capacity, she traveled and lectured on children's literature, became a reviewer, and initiated the first children's book program on radio. She died in 1985. Biographical Source : Something About the Author, v. 4 p. 26-27, v. 43 p. 36-37. Eric Philbrook Kelly was born in Massachusetts in 1894 and was a journalist, author, and professor of English. He lived in Poland from 1919-1920 during the Polish-Soviet War, before returning to the United States, where he began teaching at Dartmouth. His children's book The Trumpeter of Krakow, earned a Newbery Medal in 1929. During World War II Kelly worked for the State Department, working with Polish refugees in Mexico, and during the 1950s served as chairman of the Pulitzer Prize committee. He died in 1960.
