HISTORY OF RIDGEWOOD BRANCH YMCA

The Ridgewood branch of the YMCA of Greater New York was opened in 1946 as an extension program of what was the Twelve Towns branch (later North Brooklyn). It operated in a variety of facilities until 1965, when the YMCA purchased an old courthouse, built in 1931, on Catalpa Avenue to house the extension program.

In 2003, the Y announced it was closing the building because of the cost of operating a facility never intended to be a YMCA. Local politicians managed to obtain funds for renovation, and the building received a reprieve. It closed for renovations in 2007 and reopened in 2009 as a full-service branch.
