Ely Lake land litigation papers
The collection consists of papers which document the disputed land claims of settlers in the vicinity of Ely Lake (formerly known as Cedar Island Lake), which is located in Fayal Township, St. Louis County, Minnesota. The dispute was based on an allegedly inaccurate survey by the U.S. Surveyor General's office and on the U.S. Homestead Law.
George E. and William Nettleton family papers
The collection consists of two items: a land patent granting land to George E Nettleton, dated 1861; and a letter from William Nettleton dated December 5th, 1892 declining an invitation to attend a meeting of the Old Settlers of the Head of Lake Superior.
Ansell Smith papers
The collection consists of three items: Orders from the United States War Department that allow accredited commissioners to obtain votes for state officers from soldiers in the regiments of Minnesota Volunteers; the envelope that contained these orders; and a certificate appointing Ansell Smith as Register of the Land Office at Duluth, Minnesota, signed by President Ulysses S. Grant.
