Historical Note

Violet Sieder was a professor of social work at Brandeis University from 1961 to 1974. Previously, she was a professor at the New York School of Social Work circa 1955 to 1959, when she left to attend the Florence Heller School at Brandeis as a member of the first class to enter the school.

She began her career in the New Jersey Department of Labor as an inspector of women's and children's labor. She also held public assistance supervisor positions in the state during the Great Depressions, after which she attended the School of Social Service Administration in Chicago.

Sieder worked for the Child Labor Division of the United State Children's Bureau and was Associate Director of the Health and Welfare Planning Department of the National Community Chests and Councils of America. Her other appointments included: executive director of the Bronx Council of the Welfare Council of New York City; expert consultant to the United States State Department in Germany after World War II; consultant to the National Council and Social Services and London Council of Social Services in the United Kingdom; and president of the Massachusetts Conference on Social Welare. She was also a founder of the Massachesetts Human Services Coalition and active in the National Association of Social Workers at the state and national level. In addition, she held committee and board appointments in the Council on Social Work Education, National Conference on Social Welfare, and National Social Welfare Assembly.
