Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of biographical material on prominent social work figures compiled by Dunham. Also included in the collection are some records of the National Social Unit Organization, which promoted community organization and community based services for social issues.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of scholarly papers and reports related to community organization. In addition, there are print and near-print materials related to community organization generated by the American Council for the Community, National Social Welfare Assembly, and North Carolina Fund. Arthur Dunham collected all of these materials in connection with courses he taught on community organization.

Historical Note

Arthur Dunham, a social worker and educator, was born in St. Louis Missouri, on August 3, 1893. He worked in a number of neighborhood centers and social work agencies in St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Newton MA from 1915 to 1935. He also served on the staff of the Public Charities Association of Pennsylvania Emergency Relief Board, New York State Governor’s Commission on Unemployment Relief, and the Family Welfare association of America. From 1935 until his retirement circa 1972 he was a professor of community organization in the School of Social Work of the University of Michigan.
