Historical Note
Madison House, a predecessor of the Hamilton Madison House, was founded in 1898 as the Down Town Ethical Society by a group of university students assisted by Felix Adler's Society for Ethical Culture. In 1912 the name was changed to Madison House and it was incorporated under the laws of New York State. The purpose of the settlement, which was located on New York's lower East Side, was for "promoting of the moral, civic and social well being of the community by means of the usual settlement activities . . . ."
Hamilton House, another predecessor which also operated on the lower East Side, was established in December, 1901, by Pearl Underwood (Mrs. John H. Denison) to improve neighborhood conditions. It was incorporated in 1902 under the laws of New York State. In 1954 the two houses merged to become Hamilton-Madison House.
