Scope and Content

The collection includes personal papers; Browning and Houk's files; minutes of and correspondence with the American Association of Schools of Social Work; a 1928 survey by and correspondence with Sophonisba Breckenridge; a 1910 letter from Mary Richmond concerning widows' pensions; and photographs of noted personalities in the charity and welfare fieldso The collection consists of materials that appear to have been preserved in the files of the directors of the Division of Social Serice, which was know as the Training Course for Social Work until 1946. The files were assembled and given to the Archives. For the most part, the files do not relate to Browning or Houk's roles as directors of the Division of Social Service.

Historical Note

Grace Browning and Mary Houk were directors of Indiana University's Training Course for Social Work, which became known as the Division of Social Service in 1946. Grace Browning was director from 1946 to 1951 and Mary Houk was director from 1951 to 1965, when she was appointed dean of the School of Social Service.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The papers were given to the Archives by Professor Martin Bloom of the Indiana University Graduate School of Social Service in 1971.
