History

NHC was founded at the Public Housing Conference in New York City on March 22, 1932. From the 1940s to the 1960s, NHC consisted of a coalition of public housing advocates, social workers, labor unions, and local housing authorities who pushed for housing reforms. However, by the 1970s, NHC aligned more with builders, construction unions, and real estate developers. The collection tracks the various issues and disputes surrounding public housing legislation from the 1940s to the 1980s.
