Biographical / Historical

The Minnesota Public Health Association originated in 1907 when health officers around the state organized the Minnesota State Sanitary Conference. The Conference met annually, as required by state law under the duties of the executive of the Minnesota Department of Health. In 1947, the Sanitary Conference expanded its membership to anyone who was engaged in public health work in the state and changed its name to the Minnesota Public Health Conference. The American Public Health Association officially recognized the Minnesota Public Health Conference as its affiliate in 1948. In 1956, the name changed to Minnesota Public Health Association.

Custodial History

Beginning in the mid-1940s to 1981, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) maintained MPHA records. This collection was then transferred to the Wangensteen historical Library of Biology and Medicine in Diehl Hall of the University of Minnesota Libraries. Due to space constraints, library officials notified MPHA in 2011 that it could no longer store its archives there. Since that time, the Dean's Office of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health offered temporary storage and work space. In January 2017, the MPHA Governing Council approved the transfer of ownership of its records collection to the Social Welfare History Archives of the University of Minnesota Libraries. This collection incorporated the recent donation of A Public Health Journal program tapes and DVDs by Dr. Ed Ehlinger, Minnesota Commissioner of Health and MPHA Past president, that are products of a cable television show that he has hosted since 1985. On March 31, 2017, the entire MPHA records collection was given and physically moved to the Social Welfare History Archives.
