 Collection
Identifier: Tretter-190

Scope and Content

The collection documents the creation, financing, filming and distribution of the independent feature film Homo Heights.

It is arranged in a single series in rough chronological order, beginning with pre-production materials, followed by production and post-production documents, distribution-related content, media and ephemera.

Materials include personal and professional correspondence, photographs, videos, news clippings, publicity flyers, logbooks, annotated scripts, production financial materials, audience surveys, film festival catalogs, personal writings and production ephemera. The bulk of the collection was generated during August and September, 1996 when the film was shot; June through October, 1997 between the time the film editing ended and the film premiered; and 1998-1999, as the producer sought distributors and circulated the film at film festivals.

There is a significant amount of technical information about the film shooting, including the producers log containing information on all aspects of filming; editing logs; sound logs and filming schedules. The collection also contains significant correspondence between the producer, Kate Lehmann, and film distributors, providing insight into the process of how the film made its way into theaters and the public's awareness. There are also numerous clippings files from the local Minneapolis-St. Paul press following the film's progress from early financing to filming to critical reception.

Historical Note

Homo Heightswas filmed in Minneapolis and St. Paul during August and September 1996, and premiered at the State Theater in Minneapolis in October 1997 during the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. The producers of the film were Kate Lehmann, a Minneapolis native, and Sara Moore, who also served as the film's director. The film was generally favorably reviewed. Varietycalled it "...a surreal, soapy and amusingly offbeat pic". The film opened at a time when gay and lesbian characters and plots had gained a footing in moviegoer's consciousness. The film moved away from character-driven story-lines popular at the time and instead went for outrageous effect and broad campy humor.

The film starred Quentin Crisp and Lea DeLaria, and used many local artists and technicians in the production.
