The North Star Gay Rodeo Association was founded by Frank Bohlander, Jim Chalgren, Bob Jansen, Don Olson and John Ritter late in 1989. Early in 1990 the North Star Gay Rodeo Association became a member of the International Gay Rodeo Association, joining several other national gay rodeo associations. In 1990 the North Star Gay Rodeo grew from 5 to 75 people from Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 1992 the International Gay Rodeo Association Convention was held in the Twin Cities. The North Star Regional Rodeos were held annually from 1993-1998. The North Star Gay Rodeo Association has partnered with the Borderline Dance Troupe and the Twin Cities Pride Committee since 1993.

The North Star Gay Rodeo Association records were initially processed by Jennifer Shaw as part of a project financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society. A second accession was later processed by Myra Billund-Phibbs in 2019.
