Scope and Content

This collection contains photographs, personal and professional writings, and memorabilia from art openings and galleries featuring Lawrence's work. In addition, the collection contains prints of Lawrence's original work, including decorative, commercial, and political pieces. Although the collection contains some personal documents, the bulk of the materials focus on Lawrence's professional life as digital artist during the 1990s and 2000s.

The original donation also included several books that were separated from the manuscript materials and added to the Tretter Collection's catalog.

Biographical Sketch

James Michael Lawrence was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1945. He is a self-taught digital artist and creates fine and commercial art. He uses his personal history including loss, addiction and recovery, travel, and his experiences as a gay man as inspiration for many of his works of art. In 1998 James Michael Lawrence meet Peter Michael Wilson and in 2009 they married in Iowa. James Michael Lawrence continues to create art and maintains an active online presence.
