Historical Note

OutFront Minnesota was originally founded as the Gay and Lesbian Community Action Council (GLCAC) in 1987 in response to the Lesbian and Gay Community Services closing its doors. The organization conducted public policy lobbying for GLBT equality at local and state levels and offered services and programs focusing on anti-violence, education, and legal issues. In 1993 GLCAC worked to outlaw discrimination of GLBT people and the Minnesota Human Rights Act was amended to include sexual orientation. The GLCAC functioned as an umbrella organization for several smaller organizations. In 1987 GLCAC sponsored the Northstar Project, a survey and needs assessment of the GLBT community in Minnesota, they published Out and Countedin 1988 and repeated the project in the mid-1990s.

In 1998 GLCAC renamed itself OutFront Minnesota and began focusing more on legal and political issues. In 2002 OutFront Minnesota negotiated domestic partner benefits and a year later defended the assaults on the 1993 Minnesota Human Rights Act amendment. OutFront Minnesota cooperated with other organizations, such as Minnesotans United and Project 515, to defeat a proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage in 2012, and again in 2013 when same-sex marriage was legalized. OutFront Minnesota continues to work for GLBT rights and holds a statewide conference annually as well as the JustFair Lobby Day. OutFront still runs the Anti-Violence Program, which focuses on violence within the LGBT Community, in the way of domestic violence and sexual assault, and violence directed at the LGBT Community in way of hate-crimes.
