Historical Note
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (Allies) Programs Office was established in December of 1993 in response to findings of the Select Committee on Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Concerns. This committee was created by President Nils Hasselmo in Fall of 1990. The GLBT(A) Programs Office was founded with the goal of improving the climate on campus for GLBT students. The Programs office is still dedicated to improving the campus climate for GLBT people at the University of Minnesota and to addressing the harmful effects of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification by developing and supporting more inclusive understandings of gender and sexuality. In 2006 the Programs Office added Allies to their name to reflect the importance of allies to the GLBT community.
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (Allies) Programs Office grew out of the Systems-Wide Programs Office which coordinated the GLBT diversity outreach efforts on all of the University of Minnesota campuses.
