Biographical Sketch or Historical Note

The first gay softball team in Minneapolis was formed by patrons of the Saloon Bar in 1979. After defeating the Minneapolis Police Department “Blue” team, the Saloon team received extensive media coverage and subsequently became one of the founding teams of the Twin Cities Goodtime Softball League (TCGSL). Officially founded in January 1980 by four teams representing the Saloon, the Gay 90’s, GAMMA, and Grand Finale, the objective of TCGSL was to provide the opportunity for members to participate in a softball league free of discrimination.

Bill Muldoon and Dick Hoffman served as the league’s first co-commissioners. TCGSL became the seventh member of the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Association (NAGAAA). TCGSL grew to seven teams by its second year and began publishing a weekly newsletter. TCGSL had 38 teams by 2012. Teams have been active participants in national tournaments, including the Gay World Series.
