Lisa Vecoli Book Collection (Lesbian Pulp and Contemporary Fiction)

The Grier rating was created by Barbara Grier in her bibliography "The Lesbian in Literature." (First and second editions published under the pseudonym Gene Damon.) The ratings of the pulps in the Lisa Vecoli Book Collection come from the 3rd edition of The Lesbian in Literature (1981).

The letter ratings system is as follows: A: “indicates major Lesbian characters and/or action” B: “indicates minor Lesbian characters and/or action” C: “indicates latent, repressed Lesbianism or characters who can be so interpreted” T: regardless of how much Lesbian content or characters, indicates a poor quality book. “T” stands for “Trash.”

The additional asteriks ratings system is as follows: * “indicates some interest beyond the ordinary” ** “indicates very substantial quality of Lesbian material” *** “indicates those few titles that stand out above all the rest”

(examples: A***, B, C**, etc.)

Titles marked as “Not Rated” in the finding aid are titles that may be been marked as “T” in the 1st and 2nd editions of The Lesbian in Literature, but thousands were removed from the list in the 3rd edition.
