Reed, Dwight, 1917 - 2000
Scope and Contents
Dwight Reed was born in St. Paul Minnesota in the late 1910s. He attended the University of Minnesota and was an All-American defensive end for the Golden Gophers football team under Coach Bernie Bierman from 1935-1938. Reed was one of only two African-American players on the team at this time. During World War II Reed was a sergeant in the US Army based at Fort Knox, Kentucky, a racially integrated unit. He served as atheletic director of the Hallie Q Brown settlement house in the Twin Cities and for Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. Reed died on May 31, 2000.
