Biographical Sketch of Irene G. Ramey (1921-1979)

Irene G. Ramey was born in Shiner, Texas on March 2, 1921. She earned her diploma in nursing from the Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing (Houston, TX) in 1942. She went on to earn her B.S.N. and M.A. in 1958 from Columbia University and her Ph.D. in 1968 from New York University. Dr. Ramey was a clinical nurse in Texas and New York before becoming a nursing instructor at New York University in 1967. She was professor and chair of the department of medical-surgical nursing at the University of Pittsburgh (1968-1973) and dean of the college of nursing at Texas Woman's University (1973-1975). Dr. Ramey became dean of the school of nursing at the University of Minnesota in 1975. She held this post until her death June 28, 1979.
