Historical Note
The University of Minnesota's flight facilities were established in 1941 when American Aviation, Inc. purchased 250 acres of farm land and deeded the land to the University to establish a training facility within the aeronautics department. In 1950, the Metropolitan Airports Commission created plans for a new airport two miles west of the University's flight facilities; two years later the Anoka County Airport opened and the flight facilities administrative building was moved to the airport. The University ended its flight training program in 1989 and the flight facilities closed in June 1996.
