Historical Note

The department of South Asian studies at the University of Minnesota was established within the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) to offer courses in the culture and languages of South Asia. In 1982, the department was merged with Middle East and Islamic studies and the Center for South Asian Languages and Area Studies to become the department of South and Southwest Asian studies. Because of its small size, South and Southwest Asian studies was eliminated as a department in the late 1980s, with its course offering being distributed in other CLA departments.
