Donald Osier was born in 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received a B.A. in geography (1959) and an M.A. in library science (1968) from the University of Minnesota. After service in the military during the Korean War and work as a cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, Professor Osier began his career in 1965 at the University of Minnesota Libraries as a library assistant in the map library. He was promoted to junior librarian, librarian, with tenure granted in 1971, assistant professor, and associate professor. In addition to the map library, Professor Osier served in and provided leadership for the acquisitions division and the education and psychology library. He retired from University Libraries in 1997.

Professor Osier was an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Library Association, Minnesota Library Association, and the American Association of University Professors. In 1975, he received the Minnesota Library Association’s Certificate of Merit for “outstanding service in organizing and operating the MINITEX Serials Exchange Program.”
