Historical Note

With its roots in the School of Agriculture, the Division of Home Economics Education resided within Home Economics since 1913, with a focus on preparing students to teach home economics in the public schools. Beginning in 1922, students were jointly registered in the Colleges of Education and Home Economics.

In 1970, the College of Education placed Home Economics Education within the Division of Vocational and Technical Education.. Parent education classes were offered beginning in 1976. A four year bachelor of arts degree was offered until 1989 when it became a five year program.

In 1990, the College of Home Economics changed its name to the College of Human Ecology. The department of home economics education evolved into the family education program in 1994, with a focus on graduate education, parent education and secondary school teaching.
