The University of Minnesota first offered classes in the classical fields of Greek, Latin, rhetoric and classical history in 1869. The classics department was established in 1935 to offer degree programs in Greek, Latin and classical history. The title of the department was later changed to the classical studies department and in 1986, the department merged with the ancient Near Eastern and Jewish studies department to form the Classical and Near Eastern studies department.
