Department of History records
Scope and Content
The Department of History records date from 1944-2007. The collection consists of meeting minutes, correspondence files, and committee documents, many created during Clarke Chambers' tenure as department head. The collection also includes various publications, such as newsletters and correspondence produced by the department during the tenure of department chairs August Krey and Guy Stanton Ford. The collection also includes a series of staff photographs and scrapbooks compiled by department employees.

Historical Note
Courses in history were first taught at the University of Minnesota in 1869 by the university's first president, William Watts Folwell. The first faculty in history was appointed in 1874, and in 1885 the department of history was established with Harry P. Judson named as chair. Areas of specialization for the department include African History, Ancient History, Asian History, Medieval European History, Latin American History, Early and Modern U.S. History, and Comparative Women's History.
