Historical Note
The General Studies Program, established in 1944, was renamed the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) in 1956, and offered first and second year students courses in the broad disciplines of humanities, natural science and social science. Two years later, in 1958, the faculty of the College of Science, Literature and the Arts voted to disestablish the IDS department and create a program of indisciplinary studies within specific departments.
