Faculty Dining Club B papers

Identifier: 656

Scope and Content

Although founded in 1918, Dining Club B evidently made no attempt to record its history or take note of any significant anniversaries. As a result, the first decade of its existence is not documented as it has been for other dining clubs, namely Gown in Town and Faculty Dining Club A. No special events, anniversaries or unusual occurrences are highlighted in the collection.

The records highlight the routine functions of this organization. Included are financial records, membership lists, correspondence, mostly regarding the status of various members, policies and a Statements of Purpose, and notices of meetings and lists of speakers.

Historical Note

Faculty Dining Club B, also known as Bolsheviks, was established in 1918 by Lester B. Shippee and Mason W. Tyler, both of the History Department. The purpose of the Club is “…to give members of the faculty an opportunity to meet in fellowship and discussion with colleagues representing various divisions of the University.” From its inception, members of the Club consisted of full-time male faculty, nominated by their colleagues and selected by a special committee. However, in 1971 several faculty women were elected to membership as is evidenced in a letter dated November 2, 1971, as well as subsequent notices of meetings and membership lists. Meetings are held each month during the regular academic year and include dinner and a talk by one of the members.
