Scope and Content

This collection contains materials related to the activities of the Minnesota Chapter of Sigma Xi Honor Society including correspondence, by-laws, lecture programs, executive committee meeting minutes (1916-1917), and records related to society nominations and elections. In addition there are ten volumes consisting of record books, 1906-1910 (volumes 1-3) containing by-laws, minutes, reports, announcements, rosters, membership lists from 1896-1908 and programs; financial records, 1896-1956 (volumes 4-8); Sigma XI, Quartery Century Record and History, 1886-1911, and Sigma XI, Half Century Record and history, 1886-1936(volumes 9-10).

Historical Note

Sigma Xi is a scientific research society that has more than 500 chapters in the US and abroad at various colleges, universities, labratories, and industry research centers. The society includes members honored for their scientific research achievement or potential. Sigma Xi provides grants annually to researchers and sponsors programs that support ethics in research, science and engineering education, the public understanding of science and international research cooperation. Sigma Xi also publishes the scientific journal American Scientist. The University of Minnesota chapter of Sigma Xi was established May 13, 1896, the 6th chapter of the society.

Abstract

Collection contains the records of the University of Minnesota Chapter of the Sigma Xi Honor Society.

Source of Acquisition

The original collection was received from the Botany Department on March 28, 1962. A supplement consisting of memos and notices for the period 1917-1957 gathered from various sources was added May 14, 1968. As a result of Dr. Gaylord Anderson's research into the history of theMinnesota Chapter of the society on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, approximately one inch of material was added on June 9, 1971.
