Scope and Content

The collection consists almost exclusively of personal papers of Professor Mudgett. Materials include correspondence, certificates and awards, genealogical information regarding the Mudgett family tree, photographs, clippings and papers regarding his education from high school through his Ph.D. program. The collection also contains professional papers, such as publications by Professor Mudgett and his students.

There is also a copy of Professor Mudgett's memoirs, Journey to Parnassus: An Educational Odyssey, in the collection. This manuscript includes some information on the early history of the School of Business Administration at the University of Minnesota, as well as personal information regarding Professor Mudgett and his family.

Biographical Sketch of Bruce D. Mudgett (1884-1980)

Bruce Mudgett, B.A. (1908) Columbia University; Ph.D. (1917) University of Pennsylvania. Professor of economics, with a specialty in insurance, at the University of Minnesota (1919-1952).

Bruce D. Mudgett was born on February 10, 1884. He attended Columbia University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1908. He then went to the University of Pennsylvania, earning his Ph.D. in 1917. In 1919, Mudgett came to the University of Minnesota as professor in economics, with a specialty in insurance, in the newly established School of Business. His wife, Mildred Mudgett, was also employed by the University, in the School of Social Work. A University rule was in place at this time that did not allow the wives of University faculty to be also be employed at the University. Mildred Mudgett's hiring was the first exception to this rule. Mudgett retired from the University of Minnesota in 1952. Bruce Mudgett died on February 6, 1980.
