Scope and Content

The collection contain a materials regarding Vaile's work on various University of Minnesota committees, including as chair of the American Association of University Professors (A.A.U.P.), committee on faculty participation, chairman of the organization committee for Coffman Memorial Union (1939-1941), and secretary of the senate committee on education. Also includes a progress report of aviation in Minnesota as submitted to the Legislative Interim Committee on Aviation Research in September 1952.

Biographical Sketch of Roland S. Vaile (1889-1970)

Roland Vaile, B.A. (1910) Pomona College, M.A. (1924) Harvard University. Professor of economics and marketing at the University of Minnesota. Nationally known authority on marketing and advertising.

Roland Snow Vaile was born on November 23, 1889 in Nordhoff, California. He received his B.A. in 1910 from Pomona College in California, and his M.A. in 1924 from Harvard University. From 1913-1923 Vaile was associate professor of orchard management at the University of California's School of Tropical Agriculture and Citrus Experiment Station.

In 1923, Vaile was named an associate professor at the University of Minnesota. He was promoted to professor in 1927, serving as a professor of economics in the School of Business Administration. Upon retiring as professor emeritus in 1955, Vaile continued to teach for several years at Trinity College in Texas, being named to the Cameron Distinguished Professorship. He finished his career teaching at San Diego State College. Roland Vaile died on June 3, 1970 in Escondido, California.
