The Program for Individualized Learning (PIL) was established as University Without Walls (UWW) within University College in 1971. Its purpose was to allow students to develop an individualized learning tract, giving students an opportunity to create a more flexible program than traditional university majors. In 1986, the name of the program was changed to University College Program for Individualized Learning. In 2002, the program was placed within the College of Continuing Education.
