Minnesota Medical Foundation records

 Collection
Identifier: ua01202

Scope and Content

The materials in this collection are primarily promotional or explanatory materials created by the Minnesota Medical Foundation for potential donors or interested parties. The bulk of the collection is photographic, with some textual materials. These items include brochures, bulletins, handbooks of financial aids, financial reports, and invitations to annual awards programs. Included with these materials are correspondence, board of trustees minutes, and a copy of a medical student literary journal sponsored by the Minnesota Medical Foundation. There is also a run of clippings folders with press clippings of topics of interest to the public, including medical school tutition costs and clinic openings, and biographical materials on selected doctors.

Photographs fall into several catagories: portraits of individuals, group photos, photos of units and buildings associated with the medical school and University Hospitals, events photographs and medical device photographs. Many of the more contemporary photographs in the collection were used to illustrate newsletters and other non-academic publications issued by the Medical School and hospitals.

Researchers should be aware that photographs of individuals are sorted alphabetically by surname, A-Z, without finer alphabetization. Several letters of the alphabet use more than one folder. Effort was made to sort group photos by the caption given by the photographer or the person featured most prominently in the photo. Accordingly, researchers should check both the individual and group photo files for their subject's name when looking for photographs.

Historical Note

In 1939, the Minnesota Medical Alumni Association established the nonprofit Minnesota Medical Foundation (MMF) in order to unite alumni, physicians, and others to ensure continued progress in medical education, medical research, and medical service in Minnesota; and to procure and administer funds to support the Medical School activities that would work most effectively toward the prevention and treatment of disease. Since then, the Minnesota Medical Foundation has been raising and managing private donations that expand what is possible in health and medical research, education, and care at the University of Minnesota's Academic Health Center. MMF is an independent organization, not controlled in any way by the state legislature or by the regents of the University of Minnesota. It has a board of trustees, democratically elected by vote of its membership, who administer its funds and activities.

The funds MMF releases to the Medical School are to be used for specific projects and plans, and are not part of the school's regular budget, nor are they used for basic operation and maintenance expenses. In addition to supporting the University of Minnesota Medical School directly, the Minnesota Medical Foundation provides scholarships for exemplary medical students, supports specific research projects, creates endowed professorships, funds post-doctoral fellowships, provides interest-free emergency student loans, and publishes the Medical Bulletin. The money for all these services comes from individual donors' gifts and bequests.
