Historical Note
The Program on the Surgical Control of the Hyperlipidemias (POSCH) was a multi-clinic, randomized, prospective, secondary, clinical trial, designed with the intent to test whether lipid modifiication would reduce atherosclerosis progression. The intervention used was a partial ileal bypass operation. In a 1990 article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the POSCH investigators wrote that the "results provide strong evidence supporting the beneficial effects of lipid modification in the reduction of atherosclerosis progression."
