Historical Note
Began in 1969, the Independent Study Program (ISP) for Hospital and Health Care Administration, later the ISP Executive Study Program in Health Care Administration, provided an opportunity for individuals already employed as hospital administrators to receive continuing education and earn a graduate-level degree.
Initially designated as an educational opportunity to those living in an eight state region plus Manitoba, Canada; ISP expanded to an international program serving students from forty-five nations. Major areas of concentration included hospital administration, long-term care administration, nursing services administration, ambulatory care administration, and a leadership program for community leaders who share in the decision-making process with health care organizations. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation provided major on-going support for ISP through-out the program's history. The program admitted its final cohort and closed in 2008. Dr. Vernon Weckwerth served as the founding director through the ISP closure.
