Historical Note

The Center was established in 1995 with the goal of improving patient care through the integration of spirituality, cross-cultural and complementary healing practices. In 1997, the Academic Health Center (AHC) published the Task Force Report, "Transforming Health Care: Integrating Complementary, Spiritual and Cross-Cultural Care" detailing the Center's expanded mission and role in medical education, research and care. A graduate minor in complementary therapies and healing practices was offered beginning in 1999, and in 2000 The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded the Center a substantial grant to support the development and integration of complementary and alternative medicine into the health sciences curricula at the University of Minnesota Medical School, the School of Nursing and the College of Pharmacy. The Center also introduced a post-baccalaureate certificate in Complementary Therapies & Healing Practices in 2004.
