Scope and Content

The collection largely consists of course material for Chemical Engineering 8101, a graduate level course on fluid mechanics that Professor Scriven taught every year. The material documents the evolution of the curriculum and Prof. Scriven's lectures over a period of forty years from 1966 to 2006. The collection also contains a smaller amount of correspondence and subject files related to Scriven's work and research while at the University of Minnesota.

Biographical Sketch of L.E. (Skip) Scriven

L.E. Scriven, B.S. (1952), University of California, Berkeley; M.Ch.E. (1954) and Ph.D. (1956), University of Delaware. Research Engineer, Shell Development Company (1956-1959). Assistant professor (1959-1962), associate professor (1962-1966), professor (1966-1989), and Regents' professor (1989-2006) of chemical engineering and materials science, University of Minnesota.

In addition to his career at the University of Minnesota, Prof. Scriven served as a visiting professor at various institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He was recognized as a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (1990) and elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1991).

L. Edward (Skip) Scriven, II, was born November 4, 1931 in Battle Creek, MI and died on August 3, 2007.
