Historical Note

In 1963 a student run travel committee was established within the Minnesota Student Association MSA to accumulate information on work, study and travel abroad, in addition to running an overseas charter flight program. In 1968 the Work-Study-Travel Abroad Center was established, also continuing as a student committee within the Minnesota Student Association, and serving as a central information center. Its function was to provide an informational and advisory service for students traveling abroad and assist students in finding work experience, study tours and inexpensive charter flights. In 1971 it was renamed the International Study Travel Center ISTC, eliminating information about work abroad, as well as alleviating students' misconceptions that the center was a placement service and about what services the center actually did provide. Deregulation of the commercial airlines in 1979 resulted in a drop in the number of available charter flights. In response, the International Study and Travel Association ISTA, which was affiliated with the ISTC, began to offer commercial flights to students and later operated a travel agency licensed to sell tickets to students for international travel.

The ISTC moved administratively from the MSA to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs in 1988. In 1994 it came under the Institute of International Studies Programs. In 2003 it merged with Global Campus and was renamed Global Campus-Study Abroad, offering study, work, internship, volunteer and travel opportunities worldwide, and existing under the Office of International Programs. In 2004 it merged with the International Service and Travel Center to form the Learning Abroad Center
