Biographical Sketch of N.L. (Neal) Gault (d. 2008)
N.L. (Neal) Gault, Jr. was born in Austin, Texas on August 22, 1920. He earned his B.A. in Zoology at the University of Texas (1950) and his M.B. in Medicine (1950) and M.D. in Medicine (1951) at the University of Minnesota.
Gault's early education was interrupted during his service in World War II as an adjutant for an U.S. Air Force hospital from 1943-1946. After earning his M.D., Gault served as Chief Resident at Ancker Hospital in Saint Paul, Minnesota from 1951-1952.
While at the University of Minnesota, Gault served as Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor, 1955-1959; Assistant Dean and Associate Professor, 1959-1965, including Medical Advisor to Seoul National University, 1959-1961; Associate Dean, 1965-1967; Dean of the Medical School, 1972-1984; Professor, 1984-1991; and Special Staff to Vice President for Health Sciences, 1989-1996. He retired in 1996 as Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Medicine. From 1967-1972, Gault was Medical Director Okinawa Central Hospital & Associate Dean University of Hawaii School of Medicine.
Gault was active in international medical education throughout his career as well as veterans' health issues. Neal Gault died on December 11, 2008 in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
