Biographical / Historical
The Graduate Minor in Bioinformatics was established in February 2002. Initially, the program was administered by the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the Medical School, and subject to Gradute School policies and procedures. The BI program offered interdisciplinary graduate training in bioinformatics, a research area that applies computer and information science to solve biological problems.
In 2009, the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology removed administrative support for the BI minor program. The administrative home of the program was transferred to the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics in the College of Biological Sciences. The move was effective July 1, 2009.
The program terminated on July 1, 2012, following a vote by the BI faculty members to discontinue the program. When the BI program moved to the College of Biological Sciences, the College was also offering masters and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Informatics and Computational Biology (BICB). The similarities in the programs initially raised questions of a merger, but BI faculty ultimately decided on dissolution of the BI program.
Lynda Ellis served as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Graduate Program in Bioinformatics for the duration of the program's existence.
