The first part of this collection contains information from classes and seminars taught by Professor Edward Griffin. Folders contain personnel files, lecture notes, presentations, and papers from his classes and seminars. This part of the collection also features information from classes and seminars during Professor Griffin’s visiting appointments. Folders contain class materials from the University of Amsterdam, University of Salzburg, Austria, and the University of San Francisco.

The second part of this collection contains information from the creation of all three of his books: American Writers: A Collection of Literary Biographies (1971), Old Brick: Charles Chauncy of Boston, 1705-1787 (1980), and The Telling Image: Explorations in the Emblem (1996). Folders contain research files, typescripts, and a manuscript detailing the publication process of Old Brick: Charles Chauncy of Boston, 1705-1787.

Biographical / Historical

Edward M. Griffin was born on September 25, 1937. He earned his Bachelor’s in English (1959) from the University of San Francisco, his Master’s (1966) and his PhD (1966) in English and American Literature from Stanford University. He came to the University as an assistant professor in 1966, eventually becoming a full professor in 1979, and then a Distinguished University Graduate Professor in 2001. His main areas of focus for teaching were Colonial Literature and American Literature, but he has taught many classes in English and American Studies, as well as classes in Composition and Communication and Humanities. Also during his time at the UMN, he was the Director of Graduate Studies in English, Department of English Language and Literatures (1972-1975), and he was the Chairperson for the Program in American Studies (1980-1988).

Throughout his career, Griffin was the recipient of many academic awards including a Fulbright Senior Fellowship (1983-1984), the Elizabeth Kolmer Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring in the Field of American Studies (1999), the University of Minnesota All-University Award for Outstanding Graduate and Professional Teaching (2001), and the University of Minnesota Ruth Christie Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching of English (2002). In 2010, Griffin officially retired and became Professor Emeritus.
