Historical Note
The Limnological Research Center (LRC), founded in 1959, is a unit of the Newton Horace Winchell School of Earth Sciences (1). Its primary purpose is to research lakes, in order to reconstruct the paleorecords of regional and global environmental change (1). In 1963, the pollen laboratory was incorporated within the LRC, which allowed for many years of collaborative research with foreign paleoecologists (2). Some of the major studies conducted by the LRC include research about the effects of phosphorus on lake chemistry, the effects of storm drainage on the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, and nutrient responses of algae and whole-lake biomanipulation(2). This research is crucial in understanding the negative effects humans have on lakes, as well as how those negative effects can be counteracted, thus improving the health of the lake and its ecosystem (3). Outside of its collaboration with paleoecologists, the LRC has also collaborated with geologists, environmental engineers, ecologists, and botanists, in order to establish a catalogue of interdisciplinary research (3). This research has resulted in hundreds of publications, ranging from 1961 to the present (2).
