Scope and Contents

Collection consists mainly of small black and white photographs, many of which have identifying information included, as well as scrapbooks that were created related to Sonia's time serving as a WAC during World War II and Irving's time in the Armed Services.

Biographical / Historical

Sonia Hoffman was born on November 22, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She went to Vocational High School and worked as a retail clerk at Snyders and the Salvation Army. She was a WAC in World Wr II, first stationed in the US and then tranferred to Europe after VE Day. In 1949 she met Irving Levelson and they married on March 18, 1950.

Irving Levenson was born in St. Paul on July 13, 1916 to Pauline and David Levenson. He attended Central High School and the University of Minnesota. He went into the Army Air Force during World War II, stationed in the US and England. After the war Irving bought a Phillips 66 station located at the corner of Dale and Central and named it Curly's Super Service.

They had two children, Jennifer and Joel. Sonia passed away in 1988 and Irving passed away in 2000.

Abstract

This collection consists of photographs and scrapbooks related to the personal lives of Sonia (Hoffman) and Irving Levenson.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials donated to the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest by Jennifer Levenson in 2006 (1141). Jennifer is the daughter of Sonia and Irving. Further materials were donated by Jennifer Levenson in January 2023.
