Biographical Note

Mary Ellen Chase was an American educator and writer. Born in Blue Hill, Maine, Chase graduated from the University of Maine in 1909. Chase received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota in 1922, where she also worked as an assistant professor from the years 1922 to 1926. From 1926 until her retirement in 1955, Mary Ellen Chase worked as a professor of English at Smith College in Massachusetts. She wrote numerous novels, including Mary Peters, Silas Crockett, Windswept, and Edge of Darkness, often using her birthplace of Maine as the setting. She wrote many additional works including a biography, biblical studies, and children’s books. Chase passed away in 1978 in Northampton, Massachusetts.
