Scope and Content Note

In 1975, poet, translator, and activist Robert Bly organized the first annual Great Mother Conference. Throughout the ten-day event, poetry, music, and dance were utilized to examine human consciousness. The conferences evolved into the Great Mother and New Father Conferences, and were held annually through 2010.

This collection contains promotional posters, post cards, and brochures advertising the Robert Bly Great Mother and New Father conferences. In addition, correspondence, evaluations, and reports of the conference are included. Finally, there is a draft of the presentation John Rosenwald made at the "Robert Bly in This World" conference sponsored by the University of Minnesota Libraries in 2009 which documents the history of the annual conference, begun in 1975.

Biographical Note

John Rosenwald received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Illiois at Champaign-Urbana, and his Ph.D. from Duke University. He is a poet, editor of the Beloit Poetry Journal, and was professor of English at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin for 33 years. He also conducted poetry translation workshops in China, and attended many of the Great Mother and New Father conferences since its inception in 1975.
