Historical Note
Dacotah Territory Press was a non-commerical small press founded in the Fargo-Moorhead area in 1971. Founded by Mark Vinz, Dacotah Territory Press began as Dacotah Territory magazine, which published new and established writers from the Upper Midwest/Great Plains region. Early editions included works by Tom McGrath, Roberty Bly, and Gene Fumkin.
The goal of the press was to make the work of poets in the Upper Midwest region more accessible to both local and non-local readers. Considering themselves "imports and exporters" of poetry of the Midwest, as opposed to promoters of regionalist poetry, Dacotah Territory was printed at Morehead State University ..
In the early 1970s, Dacotah Territory began publishing small chapbooks in addition to the magazine. The first chapbook to be published by Dacotah Territory Press was "Voices from Beyond the Wall," by Tom McGrath.
Along with Dacotah Territory Press Mark Vinz was also crucial in establishing the Plains Distribution Service, an organization that promoted and distributed small literary magazine and press titles. Created in partnership with Joe Richardson, Plains Distrubtion Service operated from 1974 to 1981.
