Scope and Contents

The collection consists of three audio recordings of interviews with Mike Shabaiash. The interviews took place on February 13, 15, 20, 1979 and were conducted as a part of the Boundary Changes on the Fond du Lac Reservation Oral History Project. Frank Whitebird participated in the interviews and served as assistant to the interviewer and as translator on the recording. Susan Shabaiash also participated toward the end of the interview. A transcript of this interview is available.

Discussion covered identification of the location of paw-paw-sco-me-me-tig as mentioned the 1854 treaty, identification of the 1854 treaty boundaries on the southern and eastern end of Fond Du Lac Reservation, location of boundary markers on this line, identification of Indian movement on and use of land within the 1854-1858 boundaries (in the vicinity of Prairie Lake and Puck Lake or Swan Lake), additional discussion of the lawsuit regarding Indian ricing rights at Puck Lake and identification of village and cemetery sites on Prairie, Rice Portage, Perch, and Big Lake.

Biographical / Historical

Mike Shabaiash, an Ojibwe man from Minnesota, was a resident of Fond du Lac Reservation. In 1979 he lived in Sawyer, Minnesota.

Frank Whitebird, an Ojibwe man from Minnesota, was a resident of Fond du Lac Reservation. He married Flora Pineau. In 1978 he lived in Cloquet, Minnesota.
