Scope and Contents
The collection contains the papers of Professor John F. Jones dated between roughly 1964 and 1976. Mr. Jones placed his papers on deposit with the Archives in June 1976. The collection has been broken into sections corresponding to the positions Jones held during his career in social work and social work education. There are small sections relating to personal papers (mostly his graduate work), his Hong Kong years, and the year in Milwaukee. The bulk of the material relates to his five years in Duluth and reflects his administrative responsibilities as director of the school. A warning to users and processors: on many of the folders Jones cut off the original tabs. The headings have been written on the front of these folders but they do not facilitate a quick scan of folder titles.

Biographical / Historical
John Finbarr Jones was born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 29, 1929. He received his B.A. degree from the National University of Ireland in 1953. He then entered training for the Society of Jesus and remained a Jesuit Priest until 1970, serving at various assignments in Ireland and in Hong Kong. He returned to graduate school at the University of Michigan and received his MSW in 1966. He earned an M.A.P.A. (1967) in Public Administrations and a Ph.D. (1968) in Social Work, both at the University of Minnesota. From 1968 to 1970 he was Director of In-Service Training for the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council in Hong Kong and then at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He spent the academic year 1970-71 as visiting Associate Professor at the School of Social Work, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1971 he was hired as the first director of the School of Social Work (later renamed School of Social Development) at the University of Minnesota, Duluth and remained in that position until June 30, 1976.
