Biographical / Historical
The Tweed Gallery on September 20, 1950 in what had been the George P. and Alice Tweed home at 2531 East Seventh Street in Duluth. The original collection was donated by Alice Tweed, and consisted of the Tweeds' major personal art collection. On October 19, 1958 the Tweed Museum of Art opened on the UMD Campus. Since then, the Museum has expanded both its collections and its space, largely due to funding from the Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation. Today the Tweed Museum of Art is a 33,000-square-foot facility with 9,190 feet of exhibition space. Its collections include about 10,000 pieces, including European, American, and global art. The Tweed is part of the University and functions as an art-collecting and teaching museum, serving UMD students and faculty as well as the wider community.
