Arrowhead Reading Council records
Scope and Contents
The collection is limited to Arrowhead chapter materials with a few documents or meetings linking the local group to the state and national councils. The records consist of by-laws and constitution (1958-1985), a brief history of the organization and a list of past presidents and members, summary financial information, correspondence (1960-1970s), minutes of executive and business meetings (1957-2010, gaps), newsletters (1960-2010, gaps), files on sponsored and attended programs and other meetings or events. There is a Minnesota Reading Council file (1961-1983), and a set of certificates of honors and president’s club awards. No photographs.

Biographical / Historical
The Arrowhead Reading Council was founded on January 26, 1957. The main purpose of the council is teaching people to read. Duluth educator Margaret Swanberg organized the first meeting where the council was named. First President Florence Moritz presided over a membership of 65. The Arrowhead Reading Council had about 223 members in the 1980's. The Reading Council is organized at the regional, state, and international levels. The Arrowhead chapter is affiliated with the Minnesota Reading Council (founded 1955) and the International Reading Council. The International Reading Council has annually recognized the Arrowhead Reading Council as an Honor Council since 1982. This means the Arrrowhead Council reached achievements in programs, membership promotion and community service.
