Scope and Contents

The collection consists of industrial photographs taken by the donor during the duration of his studio's operation in Virginia, Minnesota which closed in 1956. Mr. Barclay continued shooting for industrial clients through 1963. The images primarily document the mining industry of the Mesabi Iron Range, but there are a few photographs of Iron Range community small businesses, buildings, and houses of various towns including Aurora, Cook, Hibbing, and Virginia (airport, courthouse, hospital, paving 7th avenue, green house, Herberger’s store, Ketula’s store, First National Bank). There are a few aerial shots of mines. There are a few photographs of Two Harbors. There are a few photographs of Minnesota Power & Light’s Colby Lake property, Duluth harbor and vessels, and Taconite Harbor at Schroeder all from 1954. There are a few photographs of houses on South Broadway in Stillwater, Minnesota from 1950. There are a few photographs of Allouez ore docks of Superior, Wisconsin form 1953.

Most of the collection is black and white 4x5 film negatives. A smaller number have corresponding black and white prints. The negatives are color coded. The "green dot" files are career photos; the "yellow dot" files are client files. There are two notebooks that contain lists of all clients and contracts, 1950-1956, 1960, 1961.

Color transparency slides are in good condition and include: 22 slides of Leonidas Mine, Eveleth; Northrange Mining Company of 1956; 5 slides of Longyear and Lee Mines from 1952; Two Harbors docks from 1953; Minnewas Mines of Virginia, Minnesota of1951; E. A. Young Mining Co. of Hibbing from 1951; Extoca Plant of U. S. Steel, Virginia, Minnesota from 1955-56; construction of Babbitt of Reserve Mining Company; 16 mm film of Jef Drill at Reserve Mine from 1953.

Biographical / Historical

Durant “Bud” Barclay, Jr. was born June 22, 1919 to Durant and Gertrude Barclay of Marble, Minnesota. He was a graduate of Itasca Junior College and Macalaster College. He was an army veteran of WWII, serving in the Normandy invasion, Battle of the Bulge, and the Occupation of Japan.

He went to photography school after the war and moved to Virginia, Minnesota where he worked as a commercial photographer. In 1958 he married Orrilla Richardson, and they had one son, Robert. In 1967 the family moved to Duluth, where Durant continued his work as a commercial graphic arts photographer.

He was a member of Duluth's First Unitarian Church and many organizations. Mr. Barclay died in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin September 24, 2005. The collection consists of industrial photographs taken by the donor during the duration of his studio's operation in Virginia, Minnesota which closed in 1956. Mr. Barclay continued shooting for industrial clients through 1963.
